Track Logins on Windows

Microsoft hides the Remote Desktop logins pretty deep in their logging structure and there is not much information on how to programmatically get to it. I have a client who needed to get to this, so I figured I'd record what I came up with and some links.

Using Nextcloud with Windows Terminal Server

Nextcloud is a very good tool for sharing files across multiple machines. It is also very good as a backup, since the agent can keep versions and deleted files available if you want. When a user is logged in, any changes to their files can be sync'd to the Nextcloud server in near real time.

Local printer on RDP

Microsoft offers a very cool function for RDP sessions, not limited to Windows Terminal Services on Windows Server, but also works for Windows 7/Vista/8/10 professional.

When you make the connection, if the correct drivers are installed on the server, your local printer (on your client) is made available to your Terminal Services (RDP) session. In many cases, this is done by Windows simply querying your workstation for the correct drivers.

Unlike Unix, Windows logs are binary files, so you can not simply search them. And, sometimes it is difficult to find the entries you want, but it is not impossible.

Some printer manufacturers want to “own the world.” A printer only really requires a driver to be installed, but HP has set it up so, especially with multifunction printers, they want to add a printer monitor (so they can advertise their toner/ink when you run low), request your e-mail address for mailing lists by getting you to

Using Windows Server as a Terminal Server

Some of our clients use Windows Server (in our case, Server 2008r2 which is getting pretty old) as a terminal server. This has many advantages in allowing them to consolodate their usage in one location.

At a certain level, it is more cost effective. The workstations can be anything laying around, and we don't care how reliable they are. Many of these clients simply purchase a used workstation, then make a Remote Desktop (RDP) connection to it. The ope…
